Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
