Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
