Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces growing in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to undertake their own adventure, apart from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

This explains, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might seem out of place, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the team understands precisely where to go next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting Thimble, and taking all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each member has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • Kattigan knows the region and warns that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could assist the group enter places they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, Teor vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control the setting for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and Wicander betrayed the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the cast members to form the Seekers and Planners groups.

Audiences can expect finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
