Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
