A popular South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose behind the incident has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the building supervising the setup of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, according to reports.

"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a guard's attire shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Important clues, like bullet casings, were recovered from the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and investigators have been tracking them to find their location," stated a police chief.

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the family was struggling to process his death.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were willing to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."
