Jurgen Klopp admits a return to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback is something that could happen. Klopp, following a hugely successful nine-season tenure that included a European Cup triumph and the Reds’ first league title in 30 years, has since taken on positions overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and as an advisor for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
Liverpool won the Premier League last season, though countless followers who adore the manager would welcome the possibility of his potential comeback. Speaking candidly, he told Steven Bartlett: “I declared I refuse to lead any other side within the country. So that means in case it's my former club...yes. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, that means the choice could be mine down the line, it's uncertain. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, it's not necessary. I'll wait and observe what lies ahead.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about the specific conditions must arise to tempt his return to the dugout, he revealed he was not instantly drawn to such a return. “I don’t even know exactly, My present work fulfills me,” he stated. “No longing for management; No desire to be during downpours through long matches; I don’t miss going to press conferences repeatedly each week or having 10-12 interviews each week.
“The locker room isn't missed as a dressing room, however, dining out with the players enjoying conversation, I appreciate that. With many victories meaning regularly positive atmosphere around the place. I can still hear Van Dijk's laughter vividly recalled for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
He commended for his successor, praising him for the adjustments that won the league last term. Liverpool have lost a string of losses in every contest following significant transfers, yet he dismissed the suggestion that it might signal a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if spoken against. A remarkable prospect. [Hugo] Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good well-judged squad. Fans shouldn't fret over the club, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally about the death of Diogo Jota, whom he brought in while in charge, along with the consequences at the club. The Portugal international was killed in a car crash alongside his brother recently.
“How do you replace a person like him? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, it’s the guy he was. I struggle to conceive the dressing room missing him. I still cannot speak properly regarding this. A profound tragedy for the entire squad as well. Not a single person might employ it for poor performances yet it's the reality. Being in that space where his spirit remains. Coping with it on a personal level is not easy. Unbearable.”
