Following a week of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unusually high temperatures for late February.
Record-Setting Readings
On Friday midday, the temperature soared to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, per data from weather officials. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded just last year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on NWS maps for the region.
Safety Advisories
The weather service stated that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Staying hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sudden spike in mercury arrives just after a powerful storm system that battered the region last week. That system delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, leading to flash flood warnings for millions residents.

Temperatures Easing
Forecasters predict a cooldown is coming. Temperatures were predicted to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by Friday night.
Other locales that reached 90°F included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the upper eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can anticipate weather in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the start of March.
