Meteorologists are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be low, so warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Activated

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this indicated the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
