One two-month journey around the Australian Coast has been cancelled in the wake of the tragic passing of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a remote tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the group for a break. The liner departed without her and returned later that day after the crew realised the woman was missing.

An extensive hunt found her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, in coordination with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the voyage organizer announced that guests and personnel on the vessel were told that the remainder of the journey had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he mentioned that passengers would be issued a full refund, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the travelers via chartered flights".
