Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
