The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
