This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
