Three Lions Coach Shares The Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, Barry featured in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed supporting the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His path from the pitch to the sidelines commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his calling.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career took him to top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a structured plan that allows us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and rejects terms including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear during that time. We need to progress from thought to data to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, observing them live, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, attacking high up. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, especially as his class included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered difficult settings he could find to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out away from London to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
