A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
