What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
